November 15th, 2009 — November 24th, 2009
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Information, Jordanian artist, Dr Eyad Al Masri, traveled to Bahrain for a solo exhibition at the Bahrain Arts Society gallery. Dr. Al- Masri, who is an asst professor at the Hashemite University in Jordan also gave a lecture entitled "Nabataean Sculpture at Petra and Beyond". Immediately following the lecture, Dr Al-Masri conducted a painting demonstration workshop. He started and completed a painting while audience watched. "His works capture something of the ancients; they appear as sacred wooden tablets filled with scenes and hieroglyphics that seek to re-engage us with the past. The arrival of such an artist is all too rare an event. Jordan and the world beyond must celebrate and enjoy whilst we can." Mark Jones, International writer & art critic Dr. Eyad Al Masri's original oil paintings are influenced by his background in art and archaeology. Holding a Bachelors in Art (painting), a Masters in Archaeology, and a PhD in Art History, Dr Al Masri"s educational background is immediately evident in his work. Inspired by his research into ancient civilizations, Al Masri's paintings reflect the cultural forces that have shaped the region: Assyrian, Mesopotamian, Sumerian, Dilmun, Persian, African, Egyptian, and Nabatean. His works are abundant with ancient symbols and seals as well as early Arabic writings and cuneiform inscriptions, often juxtaposed with contemporary images. This visual interplay fuses the past and present and the viewer is drawn in, attempting to decipher and connect the hidden meanings in his work. Al Masri's medium and technique further emphasize the spirit of the ancients as his works are not just painted, but carved and sculptural in appearance. In lieu of a canvas, he works on a specially prepared wooden panel and carves the images and designs, resulting in works that resemble ancient tablets or carvings in both texture and appearance. Rich, warm earth tones combined with fresh and confident brushstrokes complete these unconventional and powerful works of art. Bahrain Arts Society is located at Burgerland roundabout off Budaiya highway. The exhibition took place November 15th - November 24th, 2009. Opening times: 8am - noon & 4pm - 8pm.
